About SRII

The Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul (SRII)
is a Turkey-based Swedish multidisciplinary research institute founded in 1962. The SRII is one of four Swedish institutes in the Mediterranean region. The other three are located in Rome (founded in 1925), in Athens (founded in 1948), and in Alexandria (founded in 2000).

The aim of the SRII is to further research on an academic level in Turkey and in the Near East, particularly in the humanities and social sciences. Disciplines and/or fields of study represented are Oriental literature and linguistics, archaeology and art history, Classical and Byzantine studies, Near Eastern history (special emphasis on Ottoman and modern Turkish history), sociology, anthropology, educational studies, and political science, including international relations.

The activities of the SRII include annual scholarships, lectures, seminars, conferences, exhibitions and scholarly publications.

The corporate body of the SRII consists of its members. The institute is run by a board of trustees, which is elected by the members every three years, while the activities in Istanbul are headed by the director.

Facilities
The SRII has six guest rooms in the Dragoman House. They may only be rented by the citizens of the Nordic countries. The Institute also houses a library and the Andrén auditorium, a conference hall with a capacity of 60 seated participants.
